May’s 30 Day Challenge: Improv Classes

April’s 30 Day Challenge of playing the guitar every day was not as eventful as I had hoped. My intentions were to sit down for at least 30 minutes a night to either learn something new or write something spectacular. Maybe I was too busy this month or perhaps it was because needing a big instrument like a guitar limited my ability to execute this daily action, but I found myself only picking up the guitar for a few minutes at a time.
In my defense, I did spend part of the month traveling. This was travel that inevitably took me away from my guitar. I should have planned the month better and considered moving this particular challenge to a more flexible month instead. But oh well.

The good news is that I did learn some new tricks. I hope to apply them further every time I pick up a guitar in the future – whenever that may be.

As for the month of May, I’ve decided to enroll in comedic improv classes, as well as read this manual from my favorite comedy group, the Upright Citizens Brigade. I intend to read the thing from cover to cover throughout the span on the month.

I don’t have a specific goal set for this month. If I were to pinpoint one, it would probably be to simply react quicker to things that are thrown at me. Response time and the accuracy of the response itself are important variables in business and in life. The responses don’t always have to be humorous, but when they are, they’re appreciated even more.

We’ll see what I am able to learn and take away from it, but I’m really using this month’s challenge to relax and take it easy. With the extra time I might have this month, I’m going to continue chipping away at some of my previous 2014 challenges. Remember – it’s really important to make sure you don’t lose the knowledge and skills that you gain from these challenges.

Below is a video of some long-form improv from the hilarious people at UCB Theatre.
