Five Tips for Meeting Your Sustainability Commitments as a Business

Sustainability is the art of running your business without overstepping the mark in energy use terms. While different businesses have different challenges to overcome (a chemical factory, for example, faces a much tougher project than a post office), there are common sustainability elements that can be put in place by everyone. Read on to find out how to create a basic plan for meeting business sustainability commitments.buy windows 8 product key

Plan every aspect of your sustainability commitment

For your sustainability commitment to work, you need to start with a plan. Look at what your business does, and what you may need to achieve to come within current government requirements for sustainable operations. How do you match the first with the second? Your plan needs to reflect the core needs of your business as well as the requirements set out under law.

Monitor your progress

Monitoring is essential for sustainability drives. If you’re not matching how you are actually doing to what your plan says you need to be doing, you’ll never know whether you are succeeding. You can implement monitoring into your future plans, too. Undertake the installation of energy monitors in your premises, and plan to bring down energy use by floor or department in line with a preconceived timescale.

Look at shared responsibility

Sharing the responsibility for energy use can cut your costs without harming your ability to reduce your carbon footprint. If you occupy a shared office building, talk to the other tenants about creating a joint sustainability plan, with overlapping areas of responsibility. Pooling your resources to get the heating system changed throughout the building, for instance, can give you a huge advantage in the long term. Don’t forget to talk to your landlord too. Making radical changes can make you eligible for a new lease agreement.

Find out if you can burn your waste

The waste you produce may be capable of providing heat and power for the  building you use. You will need planning permission to install your own biofuel or waste power plant. While you may not be able to use all of your waste in this way, there’s a good chance that your paper and general waste can be incinerated to provide heating or electrical energy for your building.

Use natural elements to provide power and heating/cooling

Air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and natural ventilation and cooling systems all use free power. Look at ways to harness the elements in your favour, either to create the heat and light you use, or to heat the water in your building, or to create an energy efficient ventilation system. Covering open areas with glass roofing, which is fitted with remotely controlled actuators to open and close ventilation ports, allows you to save money both on heat and cooling: when the actuators are closed, the glass provides a natural heating system, and when they are open the air flow provides natural cooling.
